PERSONAL LEADERSHIP: FOLLOW THESE 7 STEPS & YOU WILL BE EXCEPTIONAL IN YOUR BUSINESS & CAREER

Pastor Nick Vujicic was determined to be exceptional. In spite of the  limitations he was born with, he made it. The world all over celebrates him today.

Are you exceptional? What makes you think you are? Exceptional minds are the triggers of Enterprise revolution; Enterprise revolution cannot exist without such people. The ‘wonders’ we see radiating from the developed nations today, are the works of exceptional minds.

They are those that had gone beyond the ordinary like Martin Luther King Jr., Bill Gates, Steve jobs,  Dr. Ben Carson, Michael Jordan, J.K. Rowling, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Oprah Winfrey, Pastor Nikk, amongst others.

In Africa and Nigeria we have the likes of Aliko Dangote, Andrew RugasiraStrive Masiyiwa, Manu ChandariaNaushad Merali, Jim Ovia, Mike Adenuga, Tony Elumelu, Ibikun Awosika, Toyosi Akerele-Ogunisi, Jason Njoku, Fela Durotote, Tara Durotoye,  Genevive Nnaji, Omotola Jalade_Kehinde, Kennys Music…….., 2face idibia, and many more.

We also have some of them in our various industries and nations.

One thing I’ve come to realize about a good number of these people is that, they never came to limelight consciously. They just acted on their inner convictions and became exceptional. You too can be exceptional.

Today, they look like they were born extraordinary, but they were not.  They all started from small, transforming things in their hands into what seem to most of us as miracles.

Did I hear you say, everyone cannot be exceptional? Please perish that optimism bias. As much as we love and desire excellence, we can all be exceptional. All you need is a desire to make a mark in life and take off from that point; you must get there for sure.

Settling to be an average person or above average is sheer Mediocrity; it’s a common ground. I believe you are more than that.

Most of us are accomplished in our various fields – as Professionals Entrepreneurs, el te. Due to the level we have attained, we think we are at the peak.

Come to think of it, how many ground breaking manifestations had The Enterprise experienced through you or by you? You need to break grounds to be exceptional.

However, there are ways to be exceptional as an Enterprise player and life in general. The points below may not be all you need, but adopting them will take you a long way.

1.  UNDERSTAND WHAT IT TAKES: You cannot stumble into being exceptional. You must desire and work towards it, knowing that it takes time and ‘stubborn consistency’ to get there.

You must bear in mind that being exceptional means distinct or outstanding. Things that will make you outstanding in your Business or Job are three to four times more difficult than the norm.

Do you want to be exceptional? Malcom Gladwell in “Outliers” explicitly stated the sacrifices required to be exceptional in an endeavor -you need to put in a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to become outstanding. Don’t get scared at this; you’re already on it. Practice twice or three times as hard and be consistent.

According to research an hour daily study in a field turns a person an expert in 3 years. This has been proven over and again.

To be exceptional, arrive at work before others and leave after everyone is gone – give it your best shot. Be ready for scorning, ridicule, abuse & mockery, as people may not understand you. Be more patient  & sincere in all your dealings.

Strive to be better than yourself at all times, beating your very best performance. Don’t fret at bigger failures. Have the financial investors’ mindset: the higher the risk, the higher the returns. But your risks must be calculated.

2. RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF MENTORSHIP: Do you want to be exceptional? Get as many mentors as you can handle. Find mentors that are outstanding in your endeavors; not accomplished people. Accomplished people will not aid your quest for an exceptional living.

In teaching you their ways to becoming exceptional, such mentors will make you realize the powerful skills and talents that are lying fallow in you.

3. BE HUNGRY FOR THE EXTRA ORDINARY: Quest for the extra ordinary will stir up dissatisfaction in you. Challenge the status quo to achieve the only constant thing in life- Change.  Change is always for the better, but may look odd at the beginning. “Stagnation is ugly; Evolution is beautiful.”

When things get tough or look impossible, what do you do? Do you give up or look for a way out? Try new things, defile expectations, do away with prejudices of yourself and others.

To be exceptional, you must be the Master of your game by beating obstacles in a creative and timely way.

4. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT: Forbid moving with the tide in most cases. Deliberately choose the path of exceptional living. In this journey, you may be lonely and fail at some point. Not to worry, you are gathering momentum. “Focus on your focus.”

You may fall along the way. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall; what matters is the number of times you are able to rise again.

Those who dare to be different are people of depth. The number of years you have spent in you field doesn’t matter, what matters is depth. When you become a person of depth your world will celebrate you.

We have been told on several occasions of how Thomas Edison invented the electric bulb. If he had focused on the number of times he failed, the story would have been different.

Craving for depth will naturally single you out of the world of “me too life style”  that the ordinary man lives.  The ‘me too life style’ has never made anyone great, not even in the world to come.

Being exceptional is addictive; once you start, it’s almost impossible to stop. Until you get addicted, nothing extra ordinary emanates from you. Like an athlete, have a clear picture of the mark you want to hit and go for it.

5.  REINVENT YOURSELF: Reinventing oneself may not be an easy journey, but it can be achieved. Have a list of the negative attitudes you have built over time and begin to unlearn them.

Study the Biographies of exceptional people and have strategies of imbibing those good qualities they possess. Have a list of the good qualities you have and improve on them on a regular basis.

Reinvent yourself to a point that you’ll become a magnet - attracting the right people and repelling the wrong people.

6. HAVE A CRUSADE: Have something to die for. It may not be a physical death, but something that keeps you awake all night. Something that puts you on the road at odd times. Something that puts you on your toes.

What is that one thing you need to do that will improve the lives of human like never before. It could be to better the way people work in your workplace. It could be on some products and services in the Enterprise. Search yourself and come up with that crusade.

When I was doing the research for this article, I stumbled on the biography of Martin Luther King Jr. He was not a wealthy man, when it comes to finances, but his foot print on the sand of time is more visible than what past and present Billionaires can imprint. Why? He had the noblest of all virtues. He was dedicated to human service which made him exceptional.

CONCLUSION:

Everyone does not go through the same route on the journey to be exceptional.  For some, it might be sheer indolence; for others, it might be a genuine hurdle of lack of resources  that  need  to addressed, so as to take advantages of opportunities,  in order to arrive at the exceptional place.

Whatever the case may be, we don’t have tenable excuses for not being Exceptional.  Put yourself under subjection to deliver exceptional result and keep improving on your previous performance.

For the accomplished Enterprise players, don’t keep hiding behind general accomplishments, move further; there is still much to be done in your field. Distinguish yourself from your contemporaries and aim at beating the best record ever.

Do something with your life that will be beneficial to all in the society today and  generations yet unborn.

END.
