Steve jobs obviously didn’t create the prototype for ipod and ipad, nor did he manage the manufacturing, marketing, customer service. Neither did Bill gates. He didn’t write the code for all of Microsoft products. Neither did Sir Richard Branson and a host of others.

In his book, “Business Stripped Bare” Sir Branson stated that the Virgin group comprises of more than 300 companies and I couldn’t help but imagine how Branson could possibly manage them at once without delegating, and still be alive.

The global brands we see today, google, apple, Microsoft, Virgin, facebook,  ……… used delegation as one of their major spring boards, from there early days,  to get to where they are today.

It is often hard for some entrepreneurs and mangers to delegate because they want to control everything themselves. This mindset has been a hindrance to the growth of most businesses we see out there.

The founders of the above mentioned global brands leveraged on delegation to get things done and on time. The power of delegation, whether in business or career, cannot be overemphasized.
What then is delegation?

Delegation is the process of getting things done through other people.  It is a skill in leadership you need to make you function optimally to make the progress you need in your business. The beauty of delegation is that, you do less and achieve more.

Delegation is therefore a must skill for business and career growth and the reasons & benefits abound.

Reasons and benefits of delegation:

1.  Nobody is designed with the ability to do everything at the same time.

2.  Delegation multiplies your time, strength, effort, ability and what nots.  According to John Maxwell, “one is too small a number to achieve greatness.” – John Maxwell.

3. It enables you, as a leaders, to concentrate on the key areas of your work.

4. The abilities of the potential leaders working with you are released. When you hold on to your present task & refuse to delegate, you and your team will remain low.

5. Those to whom the job is delegated, develop a leadership mindset. If you keep people low, they will keep thinking low. When you delegate, they begin to empathize with you. It frees you from ineffectiveness and you’re able to produce your kind.

6.   It provides successors at every level of leadership.

7.  It releases managers and leaders to rise to higher levels. Don’t bury yourself in the operations so you can see globally. You need to see new horizons, blueprints, innovations, and so on.

Just like in other areas, there are processes in delegation; if a process is not effective, you incur a lot of wastes.

Below is a list of the how of delegation:

1.  PLAN: Planning is compulsory in order to have an effective delegation.  A good plan is like a road map; it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there. In planning, you identify the right person to delegate a task to, know the deliverables, completion date and why the task needs to be accomplished. If you don’t plan properly, you will get poor results.

After planning, march people in your team with roles. To delegate effectively, you must know the difference between a competent and a committed team member. Look out for loyalty, character, competence and commitment to delegate tasks.

2. TRAIN: Equip them with the necessary information they need in other to carry out the assignment given to them. The major reason for training is to orientate them on how the task can be accomplished. Every staff has his/her strengths & weaknesses. Don’t delegate to the weakness of your subordinates or staff. Know their skills and delegate accordingly.

3.EMPOWER: Empowerment is the transfer of power. You cannot delegate without empowering. Allowing the person to take decisions in the process of carrying out the job delegated to him/her is very important to the success of the job. Empowering is the key to building a high performance team.

4.  MOTIVATE: Give recognition to successes in assignments given. Example: Praises, thankfulness, commendation notes, and the like. Praise in public to motivate others.

5.  EVALUATE: The essence of delegation is for you to get feedback for evaluation. At this point, you get feedbacks on how far they have gone on the job. It’s a feedback forum which helps you to evaluate the job, correct mistakes and avert further mistakes.

There is a ‘sin’ leaders commit in the course of delegation, which is called abdication.
When you abdicate, there’s total abandonment of the job you delegate. You don’t abdicate while delegating; when you don’t care about feedback, the job goes bad before you realize it.

CONCLUSION: Delegation is the antidote to stress & burnout; you achieve maximum result with little effort. The act of delegation must begin with our personal lives. Cooking, laundry, cleaning, shopping, baby-sitting ……. are things other people can do for you, and can do it even better than you in most cases.  Doing what someone else can do for you is sheer waste of time.

Even when you delegate, you  must  restrategize & reorganize the way things are done; if you don’t your business, career or personal will plateu at a point.  Embrace delegation today, for your advancement.
